Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a recognized clinical disorder in which periods of cessation of breathing occur in the presence of inspiratory effort. It is present in a significant proportion of the adult population, but the majority of patients remain undiagnosed. Because this may have serious cardio-vascular and pulmonary consequences, diagnosis, and adequate treatment are important. There is accumulating evidence to support early diagnosis and treatment of this condition. The purpose of this review is to provide an update on the epidemiology, clinical features, pathophysiology, complications, and treatment of adult OSA.
