Introduction: People with COPD face unexpressed and unsatisfied needs in their daily life. These unmet needs contribute to patients’ distress. Qualitative research tried to address this issue, but a synthesis of these needs is not present in literature. Aim: To identify and synthesise the unmet needs of people affected by COPD and understand from where these needs derive. Methods: Pubmed, Cinahl and Psychinfo databases were searched to review qualitative studies about unmet needs of people with COPD. The studies evaluating unmet needs of caregivers were excluded. Quality appraisal was performed through JBI-QARI instrument. A meta-interpretation (Weed M. Forum Qual Soc Res. 2005; 6(1):37) was used to explain primary qualitative findings and authors’ interpretation. Results: 181 records were retrieved and 7 studies were ultimately included. A statement of applicability was identified emerging from 4 findings: the unmet needs of people affected by COPD are related to a lack of information about the disease, to difficulties in symptom management, to an incremented need of family/social support and to an inadequate access to care Conclusions The results of this meta-synthesis show that people suffering from COPD experience many unmet needs. These unmet needs encompass both the psychosocial and physical functions. A more effective access to care could help patients and their carer to face the disease. The identified unmet needs suggest that patient-centred, multidisciplinary care have to be extended to all COPD patients, even for those who do not recognise these needs. Further research to understand the effectiveness of respiratory nurses interventions on the reduction of the needs of people in care are necessary.
