Three adult patients in Naples, Italy, had meningitis due tomultiple drug–resistant serotype 24F Streptococcus pneumoniaeisolates. The 3 isolates were genetically indistinguishableand shared pbp2b and pspA sequence types with previouslycharacterized penicillin-resistant clones. This serotype24F strain was found to be the same clonal type as apreviously characterized, penicillin-resistant serotype 14strain. The novel strain has probably arisen through transformationof a serotype 14 strain with type 24F capsularbiosynthetic operon sequences.
