Biofuels represent a valid alternative to traditional fossil fuels, going to suffer in the next future of thecomplete depletion of fossil sources. In this context, we present a critical survey upon the production of thethree commonest biofuels (biodiesel, bioethanol and biogas), analysing the feedstocks and thetransformation process by means of the LCA assessment. Actually, a complete evaluation of theenvironmental footprint for biofuels production should guide the actual and forthcoming lines of massive fuel production worldwide.
