In this contribution I analyze how the notion of uncertainty characteristic of biological complexity contributes to the emergence of the systemic perspectives of contemporary biology and the way in which these perspectives are linked to biological determinism. I highlight characteristics acquired by the notions of causality and biological information in this context, underlining how the study of biological determinism and indeterminism opens up a pathway to a broader understanding of the concept of causality.
