This PhD Thesis in Ocular Immunology intends to deepen the interactions of the nervous system and the immune system at the level of the visual apparatus. A greater understanding of the interconnections between the two systems, as desired by neuroimmunology, allows us to better explain the pathogenetic mechanisms underlying the diseases and, consequently, to develop new therapeutic strategies. During the PhD I studied some neuroimmunological aspects of the anterior and posterior segment of the eye, such as: Herpes simplex virus keratitis and Nerve growth factor; Herpes simplex virus encephalitis and retinitis; neuro degeneration in glaucomatous opticopathy, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration; the neuroprotective effects of Nerve growth factor and hypothermia.
