We examined 125 hospitalized and balanced patients, who had a body mass index (BMI) between 20 and 25 kg/m2. If analysed using an impedance plot, resistance (Rs) and reactance (Xc) values show 4 characteristic profiles: 1) Quadrant I: Rs > 500 Ohm; Xc < 50 Ohm; 2) Quadrant II: Rs > 500 Ohm; Xc > 50 Ohm; 3) Quadrant III: Rs < 500 Ohm; Xc > 50 Ohm; 4) Quadrant IV; Rs < 500 Ohm; Xc < 50 Ohm. We also noted sex and age-linked differences. The diversity in bioelectrical values means that normality of body weight does not match normal body composition and function. We have come to the conclusion that bioelectrical values, in hospitalized patients with normal weight, allow to discriminate between normal subjects (Quadrant II) and the ones who are not (Quadrant I and IV). Some caution should be taken when considering the body weight, even when normal, in hospitalized patients.
