This study proposes a new methodology to evaluate the entrainment between music and breathing during exercise. We provided a detailed description of how the respiratory and music signals were collected, synchronized and processed. Music-breathing entrainment was computed by adapting to the context of music a common methodology used in physiology to compute locomotor-ventilatory entrainment. Preliminary data on two participants suggest the existence of the music-breathing entrainment phenomenon during exercise, with potential implications for exercise adherence and monitoring with wearable sensors.

Abstract

This study proposes a new methodology to evaluate the entrainment between music and breathing during exercise. We provided a detailed description of how the respiratory and music signals were collected, synchronized and processed. Music-breathing entrainment was computed by adapting to the context of music a common methodology used in physiology to compute locomotor-ventilatory entrainment. Preliminary data on two participants suggest the existence of the music-breathing entrainment phenomenon during exercise, with potential implications for exercise adherence and monitoring with wearable sensors.
