This paper considers a controllable generator coupled with a battery energy storage system (BESS). This integrated system is called to follow a scheduled energy profile and to perform droop primary frequency regulation. The proposed strategy allows the BESS to provide the fast and sudden power variations required by frequency regulation and leave the generator free to deliver a smooth power profile. The developed control algorithm uses a prediction of the energy required by primary frequency regulation, based on autoregressive models and a model predictive control principle for obtaining a robustmanagement of the integrated system. The technique is tested both by numerical simulations and real-field experiments.
